How It Works

Landscape edging creates clean borders between lawn and garden beds. This calculator divides your total border length by the piece length for your chosen edging type and adds 10% extra for overlaps and corners.

The Formula

Variables

• TotalLength — Total border length in feet
• PieceLength — Length per piece: 20 ft (plastic roll), 8 ft (steel), 4 ft (stone), 8 in (brick)
• 1.10 — 10% extra for overlaps, curves, and corners

Example

50 ft of steel edging: 50 / 8 = 6.25, rounded up = 7 sections. With 10% extra = 8 sections. At $18 each, estimated cost is $144.

Tips

• Steel edging gives the cleanest, most professional look but costs more upfront.
• Plastic roll edging is budget-friendly and easy to install around curves.
• Bury edging 3-4 inches deep so it stays put and mower wheels ride along the top.
• For brick edging, set bricks in a narrow trench of compacted sand at a 45-degree angle (saw-tooth pattern) for a classic look.
• Measure curved borders with a garden hose or string laid along the planned path, then measure the string.
